A practical, evidence-led CV checklist: structure, achievement bullets, contact details, tailoring and a final accuracy review.

Make the first screen easy to scan

Put your name and reliable contact details at the top, followed by a concise professional summary and the experience most relevant to the target role. Use clear headings and consistent dates. Keep decorative elements restrained so the document remains readable on a phone and in applicant-tracking systems.

Include a location only at the level you are comfortable sharing. Add work authorization or availability details only when they are accurate and relevant to the application.

Write a focused summary

Use two or three sentences to describe your role, strongest relevant skills and the kind of work you are seeking. Avoid generic claims such as “hard-working team player” unless you support them with a concrete example elsewhere in the CV.

Turn responsibilities into evidence

For each recent role, select a few responsibilities or outcomes that match the vacancy. Start with a clear action and explain the scope, tool or result when you can verify it. Numbers are useful only when they are real and you can explain how they were measured.

  • Weak: “Responsible for customer service.”
  • Stronger: “Resolved customer enquiries across phone and email, documenting recurring issues for the support team.”
  • Use past tense for completed work and present tense for current responsibilities.
  • Do not disclose confidential client, employer or personal information.

Tailor without changing the facts

Compare the vacancy with your experience. Move the most relevant skills and examples higher, and use familiar wording when it accurately describes your work. Keep job titles, dates, qualifications and language proficiency truthful. A tailored CV is a clearer selection of evidence, not a different employment history.

Review the final file

Check spelling, links, phone and email details, date consistency and page breaks. Open the exported PDF on both a desktop and a phone. Give the file a clear name such as “FirstName-LastName-Role.pdf” and submit the format requested by the employer.
